WELS Disaster Relief is planning a basic chainsaw training session for Saturday, October 4 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Albany, Wisconsin
The purpose of this training is to increase the knowledge and skills of our volunteer sawyers so that they can provide excellent service to those who have tree damage and are unable to take care of it themselves. We want to equip our volunteers to provide this service safely and efficiently. Taking this training is strongly encouraged for those who wish to serve on a disaster relief deployment.
We are looking for sawyers who have at least some experience using a chainsaw.
You must be registered as an official WELS Disaster Relief volunteer through welsdisasterrelief.org to sign up for this training opportunity. You must be at least 18 years old to attend this training. Both men and women are welcome. The training is limited to 20 participants.
The training will include the following topics:
- Safe operation of a chainsaw
- Personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Injury prevention
- How to buck and limb fallen trees
- How to clear debris in a safe and beneficial manner
A morning classroom session will be followed by hands-on training in the afternoon. Chainsaws and PPE will be available. Participants who have their own equipment may bring the following:
- Chainsaw, bar oil, gas-oil, or synthetic fuel mix
- PPE including chaps, helmet, eye protection, gloves, steel-toed boots
- Participants must wear steel-toed work boots. No tennis shoes or sandals allowed.
- Outdoor work clothes. No shorts allowed.
There is no cost to attend this training. Participants should be within driving distance of Albany. We will reimburse fuel costs and provide all meals and snacks. Lodging will be available to those who need it.
